If the hole was supposed to be a handle, let’s just say that it is not the most convenient ! Ibanez and Steve Vai got this right from the very beginning !

They tried to make it neck heavy 😀
Possibly the start of an attempt at built-in spring reverb, but I’m not seeing any diodes or power supply.
Maybe they hoped that extra spring amplitude would disturb the pickup fields enough to be more noticeable than the typical Strat “springverb” overtones?
